Interview with Lee Hanjong, director of Blues with me

la mouche cf First of all, could you explain the title, Blues with me?
The title refers to the main character’s will to interact with people around him. His gestures that make him look like he is dancing are an ironical expression about his desperate situation.

la mouche cf I found myself both laughing and wanting to cry. In many Korean films I have seen, it seems there is often a streak of dark, deadpan humour based on very absurd, frustrating situations? Would you say that is indeed a common element? If so, why is that?
The same music is played twice for the dance. But I intended to deliver different messages and different emotions through that same music. I hope the audience will take it as two different feelings, humor and emotionality.
In Korean films, there are various ways to express humor, and humor is often used also to emphasize characters and situations even if the story becomes dark.

la mouche cf What did you mean by the words “in Korea, they don’t give you money unless you ask for it”, said by the foreman?
If you don’t demand it, you don’t earn it. In other words, if you don’t actively claim what you are supposed to have, you don’t get your rights.

la mouche cf The actor playing Seung Shik is very likeable on screen. Can you tell us about the casting process?
The actor had a physical training, and also at the same time, a sign language training for more than a month. His sign language would not look awkward even to the hearing-impaired. His effort made him stand out from the other candidates, and the result on set proved that it was the right choice.

la mouche cf What other projects do you have in the pipeline?
I have shot another short film, and I am also working on the story of a new feature film at the moment. Last year, I filmed a seven-part web drama, My Old Friend”, for online audiences. As it was intended to be shown on smartphone and computer screen, it was a new, impressive experience to me.

la mouche cf If you’ve already been to Clermont-Ferrand, could you share with us an anecdote or story from the festival? If not, what are your expectations for this year?
Actually this is my first visit to Clermont-Ferrand. During the film festival, I hope to meet many people working in the film industry around the world, of course including France, and make constructive connections. Also I would like to participate in as many film-related events as possible.
I’ve got no other releases scheduled except an official release in Clermont-Ferrand. During the festival, I’m planning to join the market held by KOFIC and distributors first, and also would like to meet many people working in the film industry and guests to share unforgettable, precious moments.
