The Nederlandse Filmacademie – Academy of Film and Television of Amsterdam
For the eleventh consecutive year, the festival invites a film school.
The prestigious film school of Amsterdam (NFA) was founded in 1958. It is a division of the Amsterdam School of the Arts (Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten).
Its mission is to prepare students for careers in filmmaking: directing – narrative and documentary, producing, screenwriting, editing, sound engineering…
Its alumni – to mention only directors – include Jan de Bont (Speed), Dick Maas (De Lift – The Lift, Amsterdamned), Nanouk Leopold (Guernesey, Wolfsbergen) and Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Starship Troopers).
To honor the NFA, we have put together 2 programs of 10 films directed in the last 5 years: 2 documentaries on original subjects (a young man who is stuck at age 19 in Altijd 19 – Always 19); a young girl raised by her Jehovah’s witness father, meets him again 11 years later in Onze Vaders – Our Fathers) and 8 narrative films dealing with very diverse themes. The relationship between a social worker and a refugee (Geen Weg Terug – No Way Back). 2 friends, one who falls into a coma (Cowboys Janken Ook – Cowboys Also Whine). A father and son after a murder (Wolvenpad – Wolf’s Trail). A manual laborer ponders his own deepest nature (Steen – Stone)…
With only one exception (Een Bizarre Samenloop van Omstandigheden – Curious Conjunction of Coincidences, International Selection 2012), all the films are in Clermont for the first time.
Also noteworthy, other NFA Productions in the International Competition in years past: Stand-up in 2004, Bingo in 2010… Or in our Netherlands Retrospective in 2009 (Pijn, Hardcore, Lap rouge).
Onder Ons by Guido Hendrikxx has been selected in the 2015 Lab competition.
“Cowboys Janken Ook” (Cowboys Also Whine) by Mees Peijnenburg (Netherlands – 2013)
