Thematic programme 2014 : Ways of escape
Today, we introduce you the 2014 Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival thematic programme:
Ways of Escape
What does it mean to escape, and where does it take one? As the writer Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz said, “One cannot simply take flight; one must flee in the right way”!
The films that compose this program are naturally concerned with the question of escape, of leaving, taking flight, setting out… far from one’s family and job, from routine, from others, from danger… Even far from oneself, escaping into madness and drugs, into suicide or one’s imagination. For Henri Laborit, the imagination was in fact the one true “Praise of Escape”.
Naturally it would be impossible for the program’s twenty films to delve into all of these topics, but they do touch on them. Some characters act, others are acted upon, and still others passively resist the things that oppress them, much as Herman Melville’s Bartelby (“I would prefer not to”). Yet all of their choices raise questions for us.
We hope you’ll enjoy the ride in their company!
