Who will be the next BONG Joon-ho ?

Where does BONG Joon-ho’s virtuosity come from? Where did he get the idea of having the monster in The Host emerge from the depths of the Han river? Or of translating the comic book Snowpiercer into film? Or of stirring up the long-dormant Memories of Murder? Where did E-J-yong (Untold Scandal) and JANG Joon-hwan (Save the Green Planet!) shoot their first films?

The answer: at the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA).

Since its etablishment in 1984, the KAFA has played a important role in nurturing many prominent filmmakers like BONG Joon-ho of course, but also CHOI Dong-hoon, JANG Joon-hwan, KIM Tae-yong, HEO Jin-ho…

This year, for the first time, the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival is presenting a retrospective of a Korean film school.

    (Chang-soo Gets the job – Eui-Suk Kim)

In the KAFA retrospective, you will come face to face with the past and present of Korean filmmaking and you will glimpse its future, in two programs: “Old Boys” (OB) and “Young Boys” (YB).

“Old Boys” gathers works by filmmakers who have been around for some time already in recent graduating classes.

Almost all of the films are being shown at Clermont-Ferrand for the first time, the exceptions being Boiler (YB), 2001 Imagine and Homo Videocus (OB).

Homo Videocus, in fact, garnered both the Youth Award and the Research Award at our Festival in 1993.

Moreover, the film’s director, Daniel H.Byun, is a member of the jury this year’s International Competition.

Coming to see the masterpieces of Korean cinema frome yesterday and today also means discovering the history of Clermont-Ferrand.

    (Homo Videocus – Daniel H.Byun)

In the thirty years that separate the Old Boys from the Young Boys, the Korean film industry has lived through the creative chaos of the 1990s into the golden age of the 2000s.

So who are thos women and men who will bring a new wave of change to Korean films?

The answer is in the KAFA retrospective which we encourage all movie buffs absolutely not to miss.
