Sandrine Veysset, jury member of the 2018 National Competition
Production designer, prop master, scriptwriter, filmmaker
Born in 1967 in Avignon, Sandrine Veysset studied fine arts there, then began her career in the cinema by working in the art department as assistant decorator on Les Amants du Pont Neuf by Leos Carax. Having loved the experience, she moved to Paris, and, encouraged by her new mentor, worked for many years preparing her first film Y’aura-t-il de la neige à Noël ? (1996). Each of her films resonates with her memories of childhood, and they inspire the creation of her visuals.
Childhood is revisited once again in her most recent feature L’histoire d’une mère, released in 2016 and based on an Andersen tale. She has worked on short films, too, most notably with Jeanne Moreau (who passed away last year), in the Collection CANAL+ dedicated to the iconic actress in 2014. Filming her alongside Gérard Depardieu, Isabelle Huppert or Charles Aznavour, Veysset offered a portrait between fantasy and reality. And she even paid homage to producer Humbert Balsan, who worked with her on her first projects. Without a doubt, she will give the same regard to the films in the French National Selection that she gives to her own characters: frankness, sincerity, and freedom.
