How was Es Muss born?
On a roadtrip with plenty of time thinking about our mothers.

Can you tell us a bit about Silvia’s character, and the way she decides to face adversity?
She’s a person who never really stands up for herself, but at this day everything she has left falls apart, so she needs to do something.

Es Muss won the Best Swiss Newcomer Award at Locarno festival this summer. Are you satisfied with the film reception so far?
Yes.

What were the challenges and benefits of working on the film together?
– Luca is just a pain in the ass. – Jumana is just lovely. We’re kidding, it’s always both but that makes it a wonderful adventure. But it felt very natural because we are not only partners in film but in life in general. Which is the same thing, we think.

Is there a particular short film that has made a strong impression on you?
Un chant d’amour by Jean Genet, Un chien andalou by Luis Buñuel and Der einsame Wanderer by Philip Sauber.

What’s your definition of a good film?
A good film puts everything in its right place. Like when Charlie Chaplin shows us a Cop that never solves anything or helps anybody but is always only an additional pain in the ass.

Es Muss [It Must] is being shown as part of International Competition I4.
