Born in Algiers, Lyes Salem is equally adept on stage as on television and in the movies. He began as a literature student at the Sorbonne, then went on to study at the Chaillot National Theater School and the National Conservatory for Superior Dramatic Arts. On stage, he has played works by authors such as Shakespeare and produced Malik Alloula’s Djelloul le résonneur in 1998. On screen, he has appeared in the films La tête en friche by Jean Becker, Des filles en noir by Jean-Paul Cyvérac, L’affaire Ben Barka by Jean-Pierre Sinapi, Je suis à vous tout de suite by Baya Kasmi, and Je suis mort mais j’ai des amis by Stéphane and Guillaume Malendrin…

In 2001, he directed Jean-Farès, which received a myriad of awards. In 2004, he received the César award for Best Short Film for Cousines. His first feature-length film, Mascarades, was critically acclaimed and received a number of awards in different festivals. He was nominated for the César award for Best First Film. L’Oranais (The Man from Oran), his second feature-length film, appeared in theaters on 19 November 2014.
