Daniel H.Byun’s films are broadcasted all over the world. He is also known as Byun Hy-uk.
Several of his productionshave been selected in numerous festival and have been multiprimed at the festival of Clermont-Ferrand.
He is a Francophile who completed his studies in directing at La Fémis and earned a doctorate in Aesthetics, Arts and Culture from the Sorbonne.
Homo videocus – 1991
During the Clermont-Ferrand short film festival 2017, in the KAFA retrospective (Korean Academy of Film Arts), you will come face to face with the past and present of Korean filmmaking, and you will glimpse its future, in two programs : “Old boys” and “Young boys”. In the “Old boys” programme gathering works by filmmakers who have been around for some time already in Korea and abroad, will be broadcasted Homo videocus! Daniel H. Byun tells the story of a boy watching television day after day. Mimicking his hero, Travis from Taxi Driver, he enters the outside world to purge it of evil.
This twenty minutes short film has been awarded with the Prix de la Jeunesse and Prix Recherche in international competition during the Clermont-Ferrand short film festival in 1993.
He is currently a professor in the Department of Film, Tv and Multimedia at Sungkyunkwan University and he is also the founder of Trans-Media Institute (TMI), which collaborated with the French photographer Yann-Arthus Bertrand.
His interests in documentary and real people, and his keen knowledge of music and arts in general are evident in the unique cinematic world he has built.
