Midi Z, jury member of the 2018 International Competition
Filmmaker, scriptwriter, producer
Midi Z is a director, screenwriter and producer. Born in Burma in 1982, he came to Taiwan at the age of sixteen. He studied design and art before completing a masters at Taiwan Tech (National Taiwan University of Science and Technology). In 2006, his graduation film Paloma Blanca was invited to several festivals, including Busan and Gothenburg. In 2011 his first feature film, Return to Burma, was nominated for the New Currents competition at the Busan Festival as well as for the Tiger Competition at the Rotterdam Festival.
He made a return to short films in 2014 with The Palace on the Sea. In 2014, his feature film Ice Poison won the award for Best International Feature Film at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and represented Taiwan for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. His next film, The Road to Mandalay, won the Fedeora Award for Best Film at the 2016 Venice International Film Festival and the award for Best Feature Film at the Amiens International Film Festival in the same year. Midi Z has also made several documentaries. His first, Jade Miners, was shown at Rotterdam in 2015, and his second, City of Jade, at the 2016 Berlinale. His most recent documentary, 14 Apples, will make its world debut at the 2018 Berlinale.
