Rapper and poet Abd Al Malik grew up in a housing project in Strasbourg (Neuhof). In 1998, he founded the rap group N.A.P. (New African Poets) with his brother, the composer Bilal. After the success of his first book Qu’Allah bénisse la France! in 2004 and his second solo album Gibraltar, Abd Al Malik received a Victoire de la Musique award in 2007 and became not only a prominent figure in what is referred to as the “urban cultures” community, but also a symbol of France’s diversity.

Since then, Abd Al Malik has received Victoire de la Musique awards for his albums Dante and Château Rouge. For Marseille-Provence 2013, a year-long series of cultural events celebrating the territory’s designation as European Capital of Culture, he created and interpreted an on-stage tribute to the French author Albert Camus called L’Art et La Révolte, a mixture of theater, song and poetry recital, at the Grand Théâtre de Provence in Aix-en-Provence. Also in 2013, he published his fourth book L’Islam au secours de la République (Prix Méditerranée 2014). Recently, he produced a feature film adaptation of his book Qu’Allah bénisse la France! (May Allah Bless France!), recipient of several awards and released in theaters on 10 December 2014.
