Dinner with Awasarn Sound Man
An interview with Sorayos Prapapan, director of Awasarn Sound Man
How did you get into the idea of focusing your film on this couple of audio engineers?
I’m also one of them. This is how we work. I like to do storytelling by sound.
Which natural sound or foley is the most interesting to record?
I think the most interesting thing is that it’s always hard to record the sound you want.
Something making noise always happens when you need a clean ambience sound. We have to wait more and more to get the good one. When we want a noisy sound, everything goes quiet. Back to the question. I really like to listen to sound of water.
And which sound or noise is the most interesting to create with effects?
I have never done it before but I heard that some sound designer recorded their baby crying, then added some plug-in effect and used it as a monster in a film.
Do you prefer recording or creating sounds?
I prefer recording, but in the end, I have to do it both myself.
Have you ever tried to create a film without audio engineering?
No, or maybe just once when I was a student.
Do you think it is important to be heard?
It’s a really important thing. We should be able to speak for ourselves and be heard. I want to talk about this issue and make people aware that it exists.
Do your characters consider that the Thai government doesn’t meet the Thai people’s expectations?
Yes, based on their dialogue. I really think so.
What sort of freedom would you say the short format allows?
It depends on their mood. Freedom of expression is expensive here in my country.
If you’ve already been to Clermont-Ferrand, could you share with us an anecdote or story from the festival? If not, what are your expectations for this year?
I’m super excited to go there. I have seen many very good shorts which were shown there before. I want to hear the French feedback very much. I also expect to meet industry people to know how can I earn back some money because my film is a self-funding film.
Awasarn Sound Man is being shown in Lab Competition L4.
