Interview with Yong Zeng, director of Shit

la mouche cf How did you get the inspiration for Shit? Why were you interested in depicting this artist’s life and his special encounter?
Movie is a dream that I always want to fulfill. I am a painter, hence I know well about the art circle and their lives. The leading actor is actually my friend, who is a bottom artist with extreme activities. His life is far more excellent than the movie. I just built up this story based on his own experience and things I wanted to express, in order to embody true feelings of mine.

la mouche cf Why did you want the surreal part to appear in the film?
I truly like the surrealist painting, and the surreal expressions in my movie will deepen its standard.

la mouche cf Were you interested in intensity? In finding « the best » in a hopeless place?
Yes, I like the intensive feeling.  Our world is the best, which is at the same time a hopeless place.

la mouche cf Do you like more dark comedy or weirdos characters?
I think the reality is much more ridiculous and humoristic, and the weirdos are actually living much more real and self-centered.

la mouche cf Are you interested in the area of gender and do you prepare further films on the topic?
I am truly interested in this field. I also have other scripts belonging to this area.

la mouche cf What were the films that have inspired you the most this past year?
The most important experience I have ever been going through is that I realized the dream of making a movie, by leading a young team without any experience, which makes me even more firmly believe that the meaning of the human existence is to stick to their dreams. I have been waiting for 30 years on that dream.

la mouche cf If you’ve already been to the Clermont-Ferrand, could you share with us an anecdote or story from the festival. If not, what are your expectations for this edition?
I am really willing to share the experience and funny stories during the making of this movie with others.

la mouche cf Are other releases scheduled?
I have another version which is longer than this. The clue is much clearer, but the translation is not so correct. So I am not sure yet to screen this version.

Shit will is being shown in Lab Competition L5.
